Barça Regal’s third Euroleague title will have to wait. Xavi Pascual’s men trailed behind Olympiacos the whole match and lost 68-64 to in the second semi-final of Istanbul’s Final Four. The Catalans, however, did have a chance to knick the win in the final minute. But a slow start from the Azulgranas (8-0 run from Olympiacos), good game sense from the Greek side when the match was even and defensive rebounds were the deciding factors in today’s second semi-final. Barça Regal didn’t play their best game, but victory wasn’t that far off.

Barça Regal will play against Panathinaikos (17:00, Esport3) in the third and fourth place match on Sunday, while Olympiacos and CSKA Moscow will fight for the Euroleague crown in the final.

Nervous start

Olympiacos had a strong start. In the blink of an eye they took advantage of Barça’s nervousness and took an 8-0 lead. Missing from the perimeter, Barça Real scored their first basket after 3 minutes and 46 seconds. Spanoulis, with 8 points in the first quarter, led the Greek offence against a struggling Barça defence. Barça overturned four balls and were only able to score from the interior in the first 10 minutes. Something was missing.

Incomplete reaction

Wallace stepped up to lead the Barça reaction, he scored the first three pointer for his team on 13 minutes. Navarro, with almost seven consecutive points, also stepped up in the second quarter, and put Barça in front for the first time (27-26). After the comeback was realized, Olympiacos struck back with two shots from Dorsey. The teams went to the break with 33-29 on the scoreboard.

Navarro and Vázquez, decisive

Little changed in the third quarter. On the Azulgrana side, Navarro took charge of Barça Regal. The Barça captain penetrated, scored and assisted an imperious Fran Vázquez, who scored six points to keep Pascual’s men in the match. The Azulgranas, however, were struggling to find their rhythm but only trailed by three at the end of the third quarter (50-47).

Rebounds decide the semi-final

In the moment of truth, with the match nearing its end, Navarro and Sada continually brought Barça Regal within two points of Olympiacos. The fight back, however, never came to fruition. The Azulgranas went three minutes without scoring when there were only five minutes left in the match. Furthermore, Barça Regal struggled to secure the defensive rebound in the dying minutes. Spanoulis sealed the Greek win with a long-range three pointer. The third Euroleague title will have to wait.
