Messi and Pirlo went head-to-head in last season's Champions League final / MIGUEL RUIZ - FCB

The footballing world was again full of praise towards FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi after he picked up the Best Player prize at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.

The Catalan club earned four awards at the gala, Best Club, Best Chairman, Best Player and Best Media.

Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo were also recongised for their impressive careers. The MLS-based duo lavished praise on Messi’s humilty and character among other qualities.

"I grew up watching Maradona, who is my favourite player but for me Messi is the best, not just this year but every year. I love watching him play," said Lampard.

The former Chelsea man also felt that Messi was the front-runner for the Ballon d’Or award ahead of Neymar Jr and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Italian legend Pirlo agreed with Lampard, saying that “this year, he (Messi) has won the Champions League, the Club World Cup and I believe he is the number one candidate for the Ballon d’Or.

“Messi is a great player. He has demonstrated it time and time again. He is one of the best in the world,” said the Italian World Cup winner.
