Gerard Piqué is in Japan to add another trophy to his collection. “The hope is that we win and we are looking forward to it. The Club World Cup is a prestigious competition, you have to in the Champions League to play in it. This is a unique opportunity that history gives you to keep winning,” said the Barça defender in the pre-game press conference ahead of Thursday’s semi-final against Guangzhou Evergrande.

The centre back is taking the Catalans debut in the competition as another challenge. “This is a different competition. You come up against teams you don’t normally face. It’s enjoyable to have these new experiences, new objectives and you get to know new cultures and different ways of understanding football. It’s good on a professional level,” added Piqué.

He expects a Guangzhou Evergrande ready to try and nullify Barça’s style of play. “I suppose they will use everything they can to stop us and our way of playing. Fouls is one way of doing it.” He added: “Scolari is a more defensive coach and they will try to make things difficult for us and hit on the counter.”

In reply, he sees Barça playing the way they always do. “We still haven’t finished studying our opponents. Asian teams are very dynamic, they work very hard and are intense. We will have to have the ball and the control of the game to dictate the pace that best suits us. That is what we have always done and what we will try to do on Friday,” explained the Catalan defender.
