Wednesday’s victory in Gijón over Sporting produced a trove of data. Here’s a look at the most interesting points:

Striker Luis Suárez has the Golden Shoe clear in his sights after scoring once at El Molinón, his eleventh in the last six games. Suárez is the top scorer in the league with 24 goals — three more than Cristiano Ronaldo) — tying him with Gonzalo Higuaín of Napoli in this year’s race for the award given to Europe’s top domestic goal scorer.

Suárez now has 40 goals in 50 league games since joining FC Barcelona, a stretch over which the team compiled a record of 39 wins, five draws and six defeats). This season alone Suárez has 40 goals across all six competitions he’s played in. Overall, since signing with Barça, Suárez has 65 goals in 79 games played, helping Barça to a record of 64 wins, seven draws and eight losses.

Seventeen seems to be Suárez’s lucky number, as he has scored a total of eight goals in Barça’s last four games played on the 17th of the month — Wednesday’s goal at Sporting came after a hat-trick against Athletic Club on 17 January, a hat-trick against Guangzhou on 17 December, and a goal against Rayo Vallecano on 17 October.

Lionel Messi became the first player to ever surpass the 300 goal plateau in La Liga, doing so with a double to finish the match at 301. Messi also reached two other previous milestones with multi-goal games, going from 98 to 101 versus Almería on 20 November 2010 and from 198 to 202 versus Osasuna on 27 January 2013.

Messi’s 300th goal came with the left foot and from outside the box. Of his 301 goals scored in the league, 240 were with his left foot, with 41 coming on shots from outside the penalty area.  Take a look at this video from Barça’s pre-game warm-ups, during which it appears Messi was having a dress rehearsal for his 300th:

Midfielder Sergio Busquets, who played 80 minutes, was a model of efficiency, leading the game with 96 completed passes out of 99 attempts. (See image). Busquets will be resting this weekend, though, as he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and will thus be suspended for Saturday’s match at Las Palmas.
