Andoni Zubizarreta and vice-president Jordi Mestre presented Jérémy Mathieu as a new FC Barcelona player this Thursday. The director of football characterised the Frenchman as “a player that used to play on the left and has adapted his play to be a center back.” He added that “he’s good at playing out from the back, he’s powerful and he has quality. We didn’t just sign a great center back, we signed a great footballer.”

The director of football continued on to say that Mathieu “knows how to play with a lot of space between him and the goal he’s defending, that’s a basic trait that all Barça defenders have.” In addition, Zubizarreta said that “Mathieu gives us versatility, he’s intense and he knows how to play in a three-man defence.” Finally, the director of football declared that the center back is “an excellent football player.”

“Having Xavi on the team is always positive”

Zubizarreta also touched on other aspects concerning the first team. Firstly, he showed his pleasure at Xavi Hernández’s decision to stay on at the Club: “Having Xavi on the team is always positive in every aspect. The best possible news we have is that he’s still a Barça player.” The director of football went on to say that “we have an interesting team. We will make improvements if we can.”
