Sergio Busquets was the hero at Mestalla tonight after scoring the only goal of the game in the dying seconds of injury time. “We knew it would be a difficult win against a renewed team” he said afterwards. “They’ve got new players and a new manager. These three points leave a very nice taste in the mouth. They give us extra joy, hope and desire.”

Talking about his winner, the midfielder said “we weren’t settling for a a draw. We knew it was a difficult ground but we kept going until the end and luckily we managed to get the goal. After a corner the ball fell at my feet after Diego had saved from Neymar and I smacked it as hard as I could”.

Asked about his playing position today, he added that “we knew Valencia could try anything, so Messi was out on the wing and coming inwards, with Alves pushing up. So we thought it would be better if I stayed there to put pressure on our opponent when they gave the ball away. I like playing out wide. We lose in some areas but gain in others. The most important thing is balance

Here are some other comments made by first team players today:

Luis Suárez:

“In games like these, like against Sevilla or Apoel, you know you’re up against a tough opponent, and so you enjoy winning more and it strengthens the team”.

“My relationship with Messi and Neymar on the pitch is improving all the time, but there are other players in the squad who can also do their bit to help the team”.

“Of course it could have been a very different situation. We could have taken a couple of chances and won the match, but then again, so could they”.

“It’s an odd situation. The ball doesn’t want to go in but I’m always working on it. The goalkeeper saved the first one, but the second made me angry because I could see that I wasn’t offside. I took a step back to make sure I was in the right position, in line, and that’s why I was angry. It was a fair goal”.

“They didn’t leave space open at the back, they were aggressive, they played on the counter, but we also knew how to impose our game. We had clear chances, and Suárez has told us that his goal wasn’t offside, so we deserved to win”.

“We looked for the usual things, Mascherano and Busquets control counter attacks well and stopped everything. We controlled things pretty well and made the most of any mistakes they made to create danger”.

“On the incident this morning, I don’t know if there is any way to stop it. These things should never be allowed to happen. I just want to express my condolences to the family and Deportivo”.
