Luis Enrique was speaking after the 1-0 win at Mestalla / MIGUEL RUIZ-FCB

[[DES_1]]"I am proud of the team. I have been since the start of the season” said FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique after the 1-0 win in Valencia. "We were up against a difficult opponent. We had chances to score and we played well”.

Busquets’ goal didn’t come until the final minute, but the Asturian was impressed with his players. "There are still some imprecisions” he admitted. “But we played well. This team is ready to go hand-in-hand right until the end to get the win. We got our strategy right and managed to control the game. We still need to improve, but so does every team in the competition. We’re on the right track.”

The idea to play Mascherano and Busquets together might have looked like a risk, but the manager explained his decision by saying that “with Busi and Mascherano in midfield we were looking for more control to prevent Valencia from getting the ball through to the forwards. I like to pick the right kind of players for each game.” His tactics paid off in the end, but the team had to work incredibly hard to get there. “We had three shots right in front of goal! But winning a game in the 93rd minute is really nice.”

He was pressed to explain why he seems to play a different eleven every week, and replied that “I’m convinced that the best way to get to the end of the season is by playing as a team and using as many players as possible in the best way we can. I have always worked like that, and at Barça it hasn’t been going badly so far.”

LFP reaction

The football world is in shock following the events today at the Vicente Calderón, which ended in the death of a Deportivo la Coruña supporter. The Spanish Football League made an announcement before every game in the Spanish first and second divisions today:

“The LFP condemns any act of violence, racism, xenophobia or intolerance in professional football.

The Football League and its clubs are working alongside Aficiones Unidas [the supporters association] and the State Security Forces to end all types of violence in sport. Given the sad events that happened today, we would like to express our most sincere condolence to family of the man who died this morning. May he rest in peace”.

Luis Enrique also commented on what had happened, saying that "the clubs and federations have to come down tough on violence in football. This does not form part of football, and violence should be eradicated from football and from society.”
