Alexis leads Chile to victory over Australia (3-1)

The FC Barcelona forward scored the opener and gave an assist in the South American country's opening match of the World Cup

Chile took on Australia this evening in Cuiabá in their opening match of the 2014 World Cup. Alexis Sánchez was in the starting line-up and led his team to victory. The FC Barcelona forward scored the opener and gave an assist in Chile’s 3-1 victory over Australia.

The Chileans got off to a flying start against the Aussies as Alexis scored the opener in the eleventh minute when he pounced on a loose ball in the area. Then the FC Barcelona forward, two minutes later, charged at the Australian defence and laid off a pass for Valdivia, who slotted the ball into the roof of goal to double the South American team’s lead. Australia reacted immediately and surged forward. Cahill beat Medel in the air to pull a goal back and send the teams to the break with 2-1 on the scoreboard.

The second half saw the Australians force Chile back into their own half of the pitch. In the opening 15 minutes of the half Bravo was called on to make multiple saves to preserve the one-goal lead. But Chile managed to double their advantage thanks to a strike from Becausejour in added time.

Chile will face Spain next on June 18.
