During Josep Guardiola’s tenure on the Barça bench, Catalans and Andalusians have played against each other 11 times, with a balance of 7 victories, 2 draws and 2 defeats for the Azulgrana. In terms of goals scored, Pep’s Barca has out scored Sevilla by 27 to 8. In the first half of this season, an aggressive Barça was stopped by a Sevilla led by an inspired Javi Varas; the game ended in a goalless draw.

A combative Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán

The differences in numbers between the two sides becomes a little less evident at the Sánchez Pizjuán. Of the five game that Barça has played in Seville, they have won three, drawn one and lost one. Of the three victories, two of them were by a single goal, the other was in Guardiola’s first year when Barça managed a 0-3 win thanks to goals from Messi (2) and Eto’o.

In the goals scored department, Barça and Sevilla are relatively even at the Pizjuán: nine goals for the Azulgrana and six for Sevilla. Last season Barça wasn’t able to break a one-all deadlock at the Pizjuán, while in the 2009/10 season, the Azulgranas dominated (0-3), but two Sevilla goals in three minutes (min. 68 and min. 71) pinned Barça back in a game that looked to be over.

Both sides of the coin

The other two games that brought Guardiola’s men to the Sánchez Pizjuán brought mixed fortunes for Barça. Last season, Barça lost the away match of the Spanish Super Cup by 3-1, however Guardiola’s men ended up winning the competition thanks to a 4-0 fight back at the Camp Nou.

Ironically, a 0-1 victory in the 2009/10 season was insufficient to see off Sevilla in the round of 16 of the King’s Cup. An aggressive Barça was stopped by an inspired Palop, who only conceded a goal to Xavi. The keeper’s performance frustrated a Barça that tried everything to win, but the final score wasn’t enough to overturn the 1-2 from the away leg. This was the first competition that Guardiola’s Barça was eliminated from.

In terms of Barça’s overall visits to Seville in the Liga, the Azulgrana team has won 19 times, drawn 19, and lost 29.
