After playing in many derbies for FC Barcelona’s youth team and eight seasons in the Premier League, Cesc Fàbregas made his debut, finally, in the Catalan derby with the first team. The midfielder once again picked the ideal place to prove that he’s quickly adapting to Barça’s play style and thanks to his goal, Barça came away with a point from Cornellà-El Prat.

Rewarded at the start

In the 15th minute, Cesc took advantage of Dani Alves’ cross from the right to open up the scoring with a fantastic header. With the goal, Cesc got himself on the list of Barça players that managed to score in their derby debuts. The midfielder isn’t in bad company, he joins the other skillful goal-scoring debutants Stoichkov, Pizzi, Kluivert, Ronaldinho, Deco, Ibrahimovic and Villa.

Specialty: scoring from headers

With Cesc’s arrival, Barça’s second line has become more prolific at scoring goals. The most surprising thing, however, is the midfielder’s aptitude and effectiveness with his headers. Counting the goal at Cornellà-El Prat this Sunday, Cesc has bagged four goals. The Catalan has scored the most goals from headers in the Liga, he’s currently on par with Real Sociedad striker, Aguirretxe. His goals have been vital for Barça, especially during difficult matches, like at San Mamés and the Santiago Bernabéu. Cesc has also scored from a header in the Champions League (Viktoria Plzen).

Century mark

Scoring in your first derby is special, without question, on top of that however, Cesc’s goal against Espanyol was Barça’s 100th goal of the season. Barça has racked up 51 goals in the League and 49 in other official competitions, a record-breaking number of goals that Cesc undoubtedly has helped his team achieve. With Sunday’s goal, Cesc’s personal goal tally rises to 14 with Barça (averaging 1 goal every 74 minutes in the last 6 games) and he’s the second highest Barça goal scorer after Leo Messi, who has 31 goals. The Messi-Cesc connection is unquestionable, between both of them they have scored 45 goals, almost half the goals of the entire team. An incredible number considering that the season half-way mark is two games away.
