The beginning of the match was riddled with questions about who Josep Guardiola would send out in his starting lineup. On of the biggest questions was whether Villa or Alexis would start. Finally, Guardiola decided to field the Chilean, a decision that bore its fruits, seeing that Barça’s ‘9’ scored the goal that brought Barça level in his first ever Liga game at the Bernabéu. In the Spanish Super Cup, Guardiola also made the right call: Villa scored the equaliser against Madrid.

Curiously enough, Alexis made his debut at the Bernabéu during the away game of the Spanish Super Cup. Cesc, another debutant in the Liga against Madrid, also scored. Two unforgettable starts for Barça’s two summer signings. Mejor, imposible - as they say in Spain and Catalonia - and it’s true, the two players could not have hoped for a better start.

Alexis scores his first goal as a visitor

Alexis scored his fifth goal for FC Barcelona tonight. Until now, his previous goals were all scored at the Camp Nou: against Villareal, Rayo Vallecano (2) and Levante. In Madrid he scored his first goal away from the Camp Nou with a great shot that Casillas couldn’t manage to save. His goal wasn’t only Barça’s equaliser but it was the start of a great comeback.

The Chilean played for 85 minutes, he shot on goal more than any other Barça player (4) and he received five fouls. Without a doubt, he was a headache for Madrid’s defence. Before the end of the match, he was subbed out for Pedro, another proficient goal scorer at the Bernabéu.

Cesc heads home another goal

Cesc, another debutant at the Bernabéu for Barça - he had already played there for the Gunners - also made a big impact on the game. His goal, a header, put the game beyond Madrid’s reach. The Catalan finished off a superb counterattack that ended with Alves’ cross and Cesc’s subsequent header. He has 10 goals as a Barça player, 6 of which he has scored away from the Camp Nou, many of them headers, like the ones against Viktoria Plzen, Levante or Athletic Club.

Barça’s second goal was thanks to Xavi Hernández. This man is no debutant, tonight he completed his 600th match in an Azulgrana shirt with another win at the Bernabéu. All in all, it was an unforgettable night.
