The voice of the architects

The canopy designed by Francesc Mitjans, Josep Soteras and Lorenzo García is the inspiration for the facade of the Future Camp Nou. The canopy inside the stadium will disappear, and will instead turns towards the street, from the inside out, forming the outer cantilevers that form the roof of the concourses, services and terraces and form a facade that is open to the forecourt.

The Future Camp Nou will be unique, different and innovative, with a marked personality of its own.

The winning team

Nikken Sekkei has been around for over 100 years and is one of the most important architectural and engineering studios in Asia. The company were the architects of the Saitama Super Arena, the Great Swan of Niigata and the Tokyo Dome, all in Japan. The team won the tender in tandem with the Catalan studio led by the architects Joan Pascual and Ramon Ausió, who can also boast a long and proven track record both in Barcelona and in Catalonia with residential, office and hotel projects, such as the Diagonal Zero Hotel, the rehabilitation of Casa de la Lactancia and the Jaume I School in Terrassa.

b720 Fermín Vázquez studio takes over from Pascual-Ausió

In the framework of the FC Barcelona Espai Barça project, ​​which includes the redesign and construction of its sports complex in Les Corts neighbourhood, the club is working to completely renew and expand the Camp Nou.

The team formed by Nikken Sekkei and Joan Pascual - Ramon Ausió Arquitectes, authors of the winning project in the tender for the design and construction of the new stadium, has worked together with FC Barcelona in the preliminary design phase that includes the preparation of the blueprint for the future Camp Nou, integrated within the Espai Barça project.

Together with Nikken Sekkei, Joan Pascual - Ramon Ausió Arquitectes have architecturally defined the general outlines of the future stadium and the adjacent spaces, to ensure the proper development of the project in future design phases and overseeing construction.

Now that the documentation has been presented to Barcelona City Council to apply for a Modification of the General Metropolitan Plan around the FC Barcelona premises in the district of Les Corts, and in which the bases and parameters of the future Camp Nou have been defined, the Joan Pascual-Ramon Ausió Arquitectes Studio has concluded its participation in the project for the future Camp Nou.

The Joan Pascual-Ramon Ausió Arquitectes Studio has worked together with Nikken Sekkei and the club for the last two years to lay the foundations for a revolutionary and innovative stadium that will make history when its construction is complete. Sticking to the essence of FC Barcelona, ​staying faithful to the original Camp Nou and striking a balance between Catalan architecture and social, economic and environmental sustainability are some of the architectural objectives that formed an essential part of this fruitful collaboration.

In the phase that is now beginning, in which construction will commence on the future Camp Nou, the prestigious Nikken Sekkei architectural studio will continue in partnership with whatever local and international teams that it needs to work with at any time in order to ensure the success of the project, and most particularly with the b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectes studio, which will work with Nikken Sekkei in the development of the architectural project and the construction of the stadium. b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectes was the co-designer of the Torre Agbar and Barcelona 'City of Justice' law courts and was one of the teams selected as finalists when tendering ideas for the future Camp Nou.

 

The features of the Future Camp Nou

The new, open, spacious, covered, comfortable and accessible stadium will be adapted to new times and to the people

Here is a summary of the key factors behind the winning bid:

  • Recover excellence with a stadium for approximately 105,000 spectators with every modern comfort and service
  • Open façade formed by 3 concourse ‘rings’ with sloping roof
  • The Future Camp Nou is seamlessly integrated into the Campus Barça
  • Maintains access at street level around the stadium
  • Vertical cores with escalators, elevators and stairs to access the 2nd and 3rd tiers
  • Large upper ring with 360º views and connections both to the inside of the stadium and to the city
  • An integrated space that is open to the city
  • A sustainable, smart and green stadium, which harvest  rainwater from the roof and solar energy

It will be a stadium adapted to modern times and people.

OPEN

  • The cantilevers form three perimeter concourse rings, where the catering services and viewpoints will be located, forming an open façade where members and fans are the central concern.
  • Mediterranean light will filter through the roof and enter through the open facade. Glass walls will protect fans from wind and rain in strategic positions.

SPACIOUS

  • The entire perimeter is a high-rise atrium located at street level, from which fans will be able to go inside the stadium and reach the 1st tier
  • Ease and comfort when entering via the perimeter through vertical cores formed by escalators, elevators and stairs, with a glass facade on the ground floor
  • Quick, easy and pleasant movement around the inside of the stadium on all levels.

ROOF

  • The Future Camp Nou will expand its capacity to approximately 105,000 spectators and all areas will be covered.
  • The roof will protect fans from rain and direct sunlight, and will provide visual comfort and raise sound levels
  • The surface area of the new roof will be over 47,000 m2.
  • Its structure will consist of steel cables ETFE, PTFE and polycarbonate coating.
  • Rainwater will be collected for reuse in watering the pitch, and solar energy will be used for the lighting used to grow the grass
  • The roof will include the latest technology in video scoreboards, floodlighting, PA system and Wi-Fi connection
  • The roof will minimize the acoustic impact on the neighbourhood

COMFORTABLE

  • Increase and improve catering points, merchandising and services in general
  • Fan Zone and family areas in the third tier.

ACCESIBILITY

  • Well-located and distributed seats for people with reduced mobility and their carers
  • Better services and signage for spectators with hearing and visual difficulties
  • New elevators and escalators for better movement around the terraces
  • New toilets and bathrooms for all spectators

SUSTAINABILITY

The Espai Barça will be built with a global sustainability strategy in mind with regard to all of the club's facilities in Les Corts (Future Camp Nou, New Palau Blaugrana and Campus Barça) and at the Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Joan Despí (Johan Cruyff Stadium).
