FC Barcelona to retire Víctor Tomàs' number 8 shirt

Joan Laporta announces on Saturday that the former captain is to be honoured in the traditional manner for such legendary players

Barça president Joan Laporta has announced on Saturday that the number 8 shirt worn by former handball captain Víctor Tomàs is to be retired. The winger was at the club for 18 from 2002 to 2020.

Tomàs joined Barça at U16 level and is third most decorated athlete in its history, with 69 titles, topped only by roller hockey’s Aitor Egurrola (77 and potentially 80 before he retires at the end of the season) and his former handball team-mate David Barrufet (71).

He was senior team captain for eight years and a firm fan favourite at the Palau for his bravery, commitment and unquestionable talent. His honours include 12 Asobal Leagues, 3 Champions Leagues and 5 Super Globes.

His shirt thus joins those of other handball legends now hanging in the Palau Blaugrana: Òscar Grau (2), Xavier O’Callaghan (4), Enric Masip (5), Iñaki Urdangarin (7), Joan Sagalés (14) and David Barrufet (16).
