Huge reception in Plaça Sant Jaume for the triple European champions

Women's football team honoured in the city centre after winning all four major trophies in the same season

2,000 Barça fans crammed into Plaça Sant Jaume in central Barcelona to welcome home the newly crowned winners of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The team was honoured by receptions at the Palau de la Generalitat (the seat of the Catalan government) and in the City Hall, with the players, coach Jonatan Giráldez and his staff as well as the club president all among the very special guests.

After an extraordinary 40,000 fans travelled to Bilbao for the final, quite possibly the biggest travelling support ever for a women's football match, this Sunday was a further display of the incredible affection that the people of Barcelona feel for this simply amazing group of women. There were cheers and chants all the way for a team that has made history by completing the first ever quadruple of not just the continental trophy but also the Liga F, Copa de la Reina and the Spanish Super Cup. Naturally, they wanted to share the moment with the people of their city they represent, and represent in such a very special way, breaking new boundaries for women's sport and taking it to unprecedented heights in this region of the world.

President Joan Laporta was joined by institutional vice-president Elena Fort, the director responsible for women's football Xavi Puig, and other members of his board, while the Catalan government was represented by the president in office, Pere Aragonès, the councillor of the Presidency, Laura Vilagrà, and the general secretary for Sport and Physical Activity, Anna Caula.

They then crossed Plaça Sant Jaume to be received by the mayor of the city of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni; and by his Councilor for Sports, David Escudé, and other members of the council, where the team was honoured in the Saló de Cent.
