Pedri and Martens shine in Turin

Former wins Golden Boy and latter wins Golden Woman Player for 2021

Further recognition for FC Barcelona players! Just a few days after the Ballon d’Or gala, at which Alexia Putellas was named the best woman footballer in the world and Pedri collected the Kopa Trophy for the best player under 21, Lieke Martens was named Golden Woman Player 2021 at the ceremony held by Tuttosport magazine in Turin, and Pedri collected a further accolade as the Golden Boy, which goes to the best player of 2021 under the age of 21.

Unforgettable year

What a year for Lieke Martens, winning the treble with the FC Barcelona women’s team, being named to the European Championship XI and winning silver at the Olympics. And for Pedri, 2021 has been an extraordinary breakthrough year, not just for Barça, for whom he played more games than anyone, but also for his country both in the Europan Championship and at the Olympics.

Marten’s team-mate Jennifer Hermoso was voted second in the Golden Woman Player 2021, after topping the goalscoring charts in both the Liga Iberdrola and the Champions League and coming second to Putellas in the Ballon d'Or.

Two brilliant winners

Martens, already named The Best FIFA Women's Player 2017 scored 29 goals in all competitions last season, including the two that beat PSG in the Champions League semi-final, qualifying her team for the final for the first time ever.

Pedri had not even played at senior level until 27 September 2020, but went on to feature in more games than anyone else in Europe (73) in a season during which his extraordinary maturity won admirers worldwide, including Luis Enrique, who made him a key component of the Spain side that reached the European Championship semi-finals, and Luis de la Fuente, coach of the silver medallist Spain team at Tokyo 2020.
