Messi and Suárez: The best strike pairing in Europe

Messi and Suárez: The best strike pairing in Europe

Between them they have scored 57 goals in the league, more than 16 La Liga teams

Leo Messi and Luis Suárez are synonymous with scoring goals. The pair have not only headed the list of top scorers for Barça in the league, but also for the entire domestic competition. The Argentine (36 goals) and the Uruguayan (21 goals) have scored more goals than 16 La Liga teams, statistics that have contributed to another league title for FC Barcelona.

Leaders of the Pichichi

Messi and Suárez occupied the first and second positions in the 2018/19 Pichichi, an individual award that Barça have dominated in the last four seasons: 2015/16 (Suárez), 2016/17 (Messi), 2017/18 (Messi) and 2018/19 (Messi). It's worth mentioning the 2016/17 season, since Suárez and Messi were also placed first and second in that campaign. This year, Suárez shared second place with Karim Benzema (both with 21 goals).

The most lethal pair in Europe

There are no strikers in the big European leagues that reach the numbers of Messi and Suarez. Cavani and Mbappé from PSG have scored 50 goals in Ligue 1, whilst Salah and Mané between them scored 44 for Liverpool in the Premier League. It's just one more example of the ability of the Argentinian and the Uruguayan to lead from the front.

Goals that also extend to the Cup and the Champions League

Messi and Suárez have also stamped their authority on the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. In the premier European competition this season, Barça's captain has 12 goals that, for the time being, place him as top scorer. Suárez scored one goal, against Liverpool.

In the Copa del Rey, Suárez scored three goals this season. For his part, Leo Messi, in the final against Valencia, can increase the number he has (one against Levante and another against Sevilla). Those two goals that not only contributed to Barça reaching the final, but allowed him to write another record for Barça: passing Kubala as the second highest scorer in the Cup.

So, counting the three competitions, Messi now has 50 goals this year, and Suárez, 25.

First and fifth top scorers in Club history

Messi reigns supreme as the top scorer in the history of the Club, whilst Suárez sits fifth and is just 18 goals away from taking third spot ahead of Kubala. The Argentine and the Uruguayan therefore open and close a Top 5 listing that's loaded with legends:

   - Leo Messi: 602 goals
   - César: 232 goals
   - Kubala: 194 goals
   - Samitier: 184 goals
   - Luis Suárez: 177 goals

In short, they're a duo that doesn't tire of scoring goals.
