Barça Atlètic 0-2 CF Intercity: Unbeaten run comes to an end
The first chance to secure a playoff place goes begging, and so ends a run of 13 games without defeat
After 13 games undefeated, Barça Atlètic lost 2-0 to Intercity at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. A win would have made sure of a play-off berth, but that will need to wait at least one more week.
Playing the second half with just ten men after Carbonell received a second yellow did not help the cause in a game where the side from Alicante were often on top. They made their strong start count when Intercity a Soldevila strike on eight minutes saw them go 1-0 up, and things got worse for Barça when the red card came out just before the break. To make matters worse, Estanis Pedrola and Álvaro Núñez will both be suspended for the next fixture too.
There was a blaugrana improvement after the restart, including Luismi Cruz sending a free kick onto the crossbar. That wasn't the Andalusian's only chance of the second half, but the equaliser just would not come.
Barça kept battling, and it wasn't until injury time that they knew that all hope was lost when Pol Roige caught them on the counter and scored Intercity's second. Next Saturday, Rafa Marquez takes his team to La Nucía where once again a win will be enough to mathematically clinch a place in the playoffs.
