Mirotic: 'To win this battle we have to stay at home'

The Barça basketball star talks exclusively about how he is handling the lockdown in Spain

FC Barcelona basketball star Nikola Mirotic spoke to the club's official media in an interview this week, to explain how he is dealing with Spain's isolation measures and remaining in shape during his time at home.

How are you coping with the lockdown?

It's an atypical situation that nobody imagined could happen. I feel bad for the people who are going through a tough time, I think about them and about my family in Montenegro and Serbia. The virus is appearing in our cities and unfortunately the hospitals there are not as prepared as the ones here. The most important thng is that we are united, that we respect what we are told and that we stay at home. It's the best way to control the virus and to win this battle."

How do you stay fit after ten days without training with the rest of the team?

I'm trying to stay in shape as best I can. Like many people, I am limited in what I can do, as I don't have a gym or any cardio machine. With a few weights, TRX and rubber bands I can do different exercises that help me to work my body and maintain muscle mass.

What are your hobbies?

I have a lot of hobbies, but above all I am trying to make the most of these days with my children to play football with them. One of them loves football, and so do I; he's at the age in which he loves playing. We sset up two goals and try to play games. There are also board games and traditional card games from my country. I also like reading a lot, and now I have time for that when I'm alone.

How are you and your family coping with so much time indoors?

I'm handling it well. The most important thng is to be united and to be together. We can't leave the house, but we make the most of these days to play with our kids. We focus on them. I think that they are happy, because they have both of us with them 24 hours a day. I'm happy and so are my family.

What message do you have for the fans?

I want to send them a message of support and strength. I hope that we can see each other again soon. We will get through this and we will be able to enjoy our sport again.

I also want to express my gratitude to all of the people who work in medical and healthcare services. They are doing a great job which is vital, and they put their lives at risk for us. Thank you very much.
