Born in Monterrey, Mexico on April 26th 1990, Jonathan dos Santos joined FC Barcelona in the summer of 2002, alongside his brother Giovani. He worked his way up through the various age groups and in the 2008/09 season, when he was playing for the Youth A team he also took joint Spanish nationality, which meant he was eligible to play for the first team.
He was chosen by Luis Enrique in the summer of 2009 to join the Barça B squad and was also taken on the pre-season tours of England and USA by Josep Guardiola. On August 15th he was called up the first time for an official game with the first team, when he made the squad for the Spanish Super Cup game against Athletic Bilbao, but it wasn’t until a couple of months later, October 28th, that he made his first team debut coming on for Seydou Keita after 79 minutes of the Spanish Cup game against Cultural Lleonesa.
A month later, on November 24th, e made his Champions League debut against Milan and on January 2nd 2011 he made is league debut against Villarreal.
During the 2011/12 season, his appearances for the first team increased, playing in the league, Cup and Champions League. He was a part of the Cup winning squad for the final against Bilbao and also travelled to Japan with the first team players for the FIFA World Club Cup, shortly after he had signed a contract extension to keep him at the Club until 2015.
Dos Santos made his full international debut with Mexico on September 22nd 2009 in a game against Colombia and was part of the original 30-man team chosen for the World Cup in South Africa, though he didn’t make the final group of players for the tournament.
Jonathan is a versatile, skilful, ball playing midfielder, who also has a good shot on him. He’s equally at home as a playmaker or further forward as the player who makes the killer pass or scoring himself, coming in from deep. He combines elegance with precision.
