Signed by Barça when still playing at U14 level, Isaac Cuenca has worked hard to get to the top. As an U16, he left the club, only to return three years later to play for the first U18 team. Last season he made his Division 2B debut on loan at Sabadell, and was one of the main reasons for that club’s promotion.
He returned to Barça in the summer of 2010 to play for the reserves, but Pep Guardiola had been keeping a very close eye on his progress and regularly invited him to train with the first team. He joined them on the preseason tour, and Isaac Cuenca finally made his first team debut for Barça on October 20, 2011, when he came on for David Villa against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League.
He was the surprise package of the season. Showing much tactical discipline, Cuenca was played on the wing and didn’t disappoint. He was soon being admired for his accurate crosses and goalscoring instinct. In only his second league outing, against Mallorca, he scored his first official goal for the club.
Cuenca soon adapted to the first team dynamic, and started playing a more prominent role both in training and matches, and on January 31, 2011, his renewed contract included a first team registration.
