Another debutant from La Masia under Hansi Flick
The Champions League game against Newcastle United saw another young starlet from La Masia makes his debut for FC Barcelona. Defender Xavi Espart played his first minutes for the first team, coming on late in the game to replace Ronald Araujo, making him the 12th player from the youth system to debut under Hansi Flick.
Confidence in young talent
Xavi Espart's appearance confirms the confidence shown by Barça's German coach in the youth talent at the Club. Since his arrival in the summer of 2024, no less than a dozen players from the youth system have made their debuts for the first team. First were Marc Bernal, Gerard Martín and Pau Víctor in the opening La Liga fixture of 2024/25 against Valencia.
Just a few days later Dani Olmo, who was part of the youth system from 2008 to 2014 before leaving for Dinamo Zagreb, made his official debut. That same season Sergi Domínguez, Andrés Cuenca, Toni Fernández and Dani Rodríguez also made their first team debuts.
During the current season Jofre Torrens, Dro (Pedro Fernández), Tommy Marquès and now Xavi Espart have all tasted first team action for the first time in their careers.
La Masia to the fore
The importance of the home grown players in the squad can be seen in the stats. Gerard Martín has now made 79 official appearances for Barça and Marc Bernal, despite a long lay off with a serious injury, has made 27 first team appearances.
Let's not forget that there are also plenty of other home grown players in the squad who made their debuts before the arrival of Hansi Flick. The likes of Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsí, Lamine Yamal, Fermín and Alejandro Balde all underline the importance of La Masia in the current Barça squad.
