Hansi Flick: 'I'm very proud of the team'
Top spot for FC Barcelona in LaLiga after overcoming Real Sociedad 2-1 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, with Kounde and Lewandowski the goalscorers. A hard-earned win that needed a comeback that coach Hansi Flick says is testament once again to the team's ability to react when needed.
“We found it very difficult, but we also deserve this win. I really appreciate how my team is playing, how they perform. It doesn't matter if we change the starting XI a bit, because they all give their all and I love that. I am very proud. It's incredible. I am very happy for them and for the fans”, indicated Flick, happy with the result and the performance of the group. The coach also indicated he is convinced that this win can set the tone, stating “I think this victory will really help us keep improving”.
Flick also wanted to put Barça's first place position into context, going on to say “This is temporary. It is good to have, because it puts pressure on the opponents. But now we have to defend this position, and we are delighted to do that”.
Lamine Yamal was one of the key figures in the game after his return, with Flick highlighting that “It's very good to have him back”. The coach also wanted to mention Pedri, a permanent fixture in the engine room and named MVP against Real Sociedad, stating “Pedri is special, a great player. He is also becoming a better leader. He is everywhere on the pitch. He gives us control and knows exactly where he should be. He is very good and organises the team very well alongside Frenkie de Jong. I really enjoy those moments”.
The coach also highlighted the importance of dead ball situations, which were again decisive via the goal by Kounde, mentioning that “We practice dead ball situations a lot and it's really important to have this strength. We are very happy with how it is going”.
Lastly, Flick wanted to address the fans, who were out in force at the Lluís Companys, commenting “I love that many fans come to the stadium. The connection between the team and the fans is very good and we need it. Also on Wednesday, in the Champions League against PSG. We have a couple of days to recover now, but we'll see each other in a couple of days”.
