Since Xavi Pascual took over as head coach in 2009, defence has always been one of the strong points of the handball team. Using the trusted 6-0 system, with occasional tactical variations, FC Barcelona Intersport has the best defence of all clubs in the major European leagues and also the VELUX EHF Champions League.
Dominating in Europe
FC Barcelona Intersport has conceded fewer goals than anyone so far in the Champions League, leaking just 70 goals in three games, an average of 23.3 goals a game.
That is a better record than second ranked Kielce of Poland who have let in 71 goals in their first three outings. THW Kiel and MKB Veszprém, who have conceded 75 goals, are next on the list.
Best defence in Asobal and Europe
Barça’s handball team is also the tightest defensive outfit in domestic competitions. In the Asobal they have let in just 21.58 goals a game, a record no club in the biggest championships in Europe can match.
In the German Bundesliga, Füchse Berlin and Rhein Neckar Lowen have conceded 24.7 goals a game.
In Hungary, MKB Veszprém have let in 23 goals, Kolding have conceded 22.6 in Denmark, while in France, Ivry have the best record with 23.6 goals. None of those tallies can threaten Barça’s role as the defensive kings of Europe.
