The Barça midfielder could not deny that it was a tough blow to be knocked out of the Copa del Rey, and commented that Madrid’s first goal “affected us a lot and made us overly anxious”
“But there are still ninety minutes to go against Milan and we’re optimistic about our chances” he added
Xavi Hernández was speaking to Barça TV after the cup semi final second leg defeat to Real Madrid. He explained that “in games like these the first team to score has a lot already won … the penalty affected us a lot and made us more anxious than usual”. He admitted that it had been a “tough blow” to get knocked out and felt that one of the keys to the defeat was how Real Madrid were able to play the game they way they wanted after going a goal ahead.
“They were very comfortable and played a very serious game. They played very well. Madrid know how to defend and also know how to counter attack”, said Xavi. “But we still have the two most important titles of the season to play for”.
Making it count
Xavi also observed that Real Madrid knew how to make the most of their chances. “If you don’t make an impact at the moments that you’re playing well in a game, then you’ll pay for it” he said in his interview with the ‘El Marcador’ show on Barça TV. “In the first leg we were the better team, but we weren’t as effective.”
Looking ahead to the Champions League showdown with AC Milan, Xavi Hernández is still optimistic despite the 2-0 reverse in Italy. “There are still 90 minutes left against Milan and we’re optimistic” he said. “And we’re also on very good course in the league.” He also rejected claims that the team is suffering from fitness problems. “They always say these things when we lose” he insisted. “We’ve just got to find the right point … We’re having a fantastic season, but whenever you play against Madrid and get knocked out of a competition, it hurts.”
