The midfielder admits that players like Iniesta and Thiago are his role models
On his possible renewal, Bartra says "I have another year on my contract. They’re discussing my renewal, but it’s not done yet”
Marc Bartra and Sergi Roberto were at the Nike Camp in Andorra on Monday. The two FC Barcelona players opened the second stage of the soccer camp being held in the Andorran capital this July. Almost 80 children attended a question and answer session with the two stars.
“When you are at Barça B your aim is to get into the first team and play with the best players in the world. I like playing with Piqué. I’s an honour that one of the best centre backs in the world has welcomed me from the first day because he’s one of my role models”, commented Marc Bartra, who was in the first team for the first time in 2012/13. His colleague Sergi Roberto added that “I want to stay at Barça and I’m not thinking about any other teams”.
Living for the present
One of the most common questions was how long they plan to carry on playing football. Both players are in their early twenties, and are only thinking about the present. “We have a lot of years of football left in us before we retire. I’d like to always be associated to football even when I stop playing. But I have yet to think about it”, said Sergi Roberto, while Marc Bartra added that “right now we’re living for the present. But when I retire I hope I’ll stay in football”.
Bartra was asked about his first team debut, a moment he said “was like a dream come true. I felt comfortable. I remember that my parents came with me, and the looks of joy on their faces. It had been so hard to get there.”
“I played for Reus, for Santes Creus and for Nàstic Tarragona, among others, when I was learning the game. When I got the chance to come to Barça I didn’t think twice, and I’ve been here for eight years”, said Sergi Roberto, who was 14 when he entered La Masia. And Marc Bartra? “I started playing football when I was six in Vendrell, with my brother. Two years later I went to Espanyol, but when I got the chance to come to Barça I didn’t need to think about it”, said the defender, who has been at FCB since he was 11.
The players also attended to the media and discussed some of the latest issues at the Club. “I’ll fight to stay here all my life because I’ve supported Barça since I was a kid”, said Sergi Roberto. Asked about the possible departure of Thiago Alcántara, he said "if a player in your position leaves then it means you have a better chance of playing, but they might sign somebody new. I’ll work to win my place". He added that Thiago and Iniesta are his role models, describing them as "the finest examples".
Bartra spoke about his situation at the club. "I have another year on my contract. They’re discussing my renewal, but it’s not done yet" he said "For the time being nothing has gone through my head other than staying at the club where I’ve been all my life. I’ll start training with the squad on the 15th and the most important thing is to think about that”.
He ended by saying “if Tito put his trust in me last year to become a Barça player, the most important thing this year is for him to think the same. That’s what means the most. For him to trust the people who are here”.
