Leo Messi received his second Golden Boot on Monday. The only player to have won the award while on FCB’s books was Ronaldo Luiz Nazário in the 1996/97 season
Krankl, Stoichkov, Pizzi, Larsson and Henry all won the award before coming to the Camp Nou
Leo Messi and Ronaldo Luiz Názario are still the only players to have been crowned top goalscorer in Europe while playing for FC Barcelona. The 25 year old Argentinian scored an astounding 50 goals in the 2011/12 Liga, having already collected the honour two years earlier for getting 34 goals. The previous Barça winner was Ronaldo in 1996/97, the Brazilian striker getting 34 goals in 37 games.
But five other players have collected the accolade that France Football has been presenting since 1968, although they all did so before coming to the Camp Nou. They are also five of the best-loved and most charismatic players to have ever worn the famous jersey.
The first was Hansi Krankl, who came to Barça after scoring 41 goals for Rapid Vienna in the 1977/78 season. There was a similar story with Hristo Stoichkov 12 years later. Johan Cruyff was thoroughly impressed with what the Bulgarian had achieved at CSKA Sofia, and signed him up for what would become the Dream Team.
Later, Barça signed two veteran goalscorers in Juan Antonio Pizzi (1996-98) and Henrik Larsson (2004-06), who had won the Golden Boot in 1995/96 and 2000/01 respectively. Both players managed to continue at FCB what they had done at their previous clubs and became firm fan favourites in their time here.
And then there was the great Thierry Henry. The Frenchman had topped the European scoring charts twice, in 2004 and 2005 when at Arsenal. The Gunner was already considered one of the finest strikers in the modern game, but was missing one major honour: the Champions League. He finally got what he wanted at Barça in 2009, when his goals played a key role in a treble winning season.
