Leo Messi just keeps on writing his name in the record books. Last night’s game in Donosti was the tenth game on the run that Messi has scored in - equalling the record he set last season between weeks 24 and 34 (he missed one game suspended during that run), when he scored against Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Racing, Seville, Granada, Mallorca, Athletic Bilbao, Zaragoza, Getafe and Llevant, chalking up 18 goals in total.
This time around, Messi began his scoring record on 11th November against Mallorca in week 11 of La Liga. Since then he’s found the net against Zaragoza, Llevant, Athletic Bilbao, Betis, Atletico Madrid, Valladolid, Espanyol, Malaga and Real Sociedad – scoring 17 goals in all.
Equals Martín and Ronaldo
Two other Barça players have scored in 10 straight games in La Liga: Mariano Martín and Ronaldo. Martín scored 18 goals in 10 games between the 1942/43 and 1943/44 seasons, whilst Ronaldo was on target 12 times when he scored in 10 straight games in the 1996/97 campaign.
First ever goal at Anoeta
Curiously, Messi’s latest goal was his first at Anoeta, having failed to find the net in his previous three visits in the 2006/07, 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons.
