Leo Messi took another step towards becoming the highest goalscorer in the history of the Champions League. With his two goals against Spartak Moscow, the Argentine now has 56 goals in the European competition, equalling the record set by Ruud van Nistelrooy. Raúl González (Real Madrid and Shalke 04) currently holds the all-time record for goals scored in the Champions League with 71 goals.
It’s worth noting that Messi has been the top scorer of the last four editions of the Champions League. In addition, he scored 14 goals in the competition last year, the highest tally ever scored in one season.
With his brace this Tuesday, the Argentine has scored five or more goals in six consecutive editions of the Champions League.
