Carles Puyol, Alex Song and Leo Messi put in notable performances against Real Zaragoza this evening
Captain Carles Puyol returned to Barça’s starting line-up after fully recovering the injury to his left arm. The defender put in a notable performance along side his old centre back partner, Piqué. The captain commanded Barça’s back line and was given a standing ovation when he was subbed off on the 75th minute.
The Cameroonian capped off his excellent night against Zaragoza with a fantastic goal, making him the 12th FC Barcelona player to score this season. Song played in just in front of the Puyol-Piqué centre back line and provided coverage for the likes of Iniesta and Xavi. According to Andoni Zubizarreta, Song “has presence in the area and he’s got a good shot.” This evening Song proved Zubi right.
The Argentine is now only seven goals from the historic goalscoring mark set by Gerd Müller. Including his brace tonight, he’s scored 50 goals in La Liga in 2012. In addition, he also provided the assist to Song. Messi’s contribution to Barça’s attack goes well beyond scoring goals.
