This Sunday afternoon FC Barcelona’s Women’s team won its third game of the season, against Valencia at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. Goals from Alexia, Marta Corredera, Vicky and Sonia earned the three points for Xavi Llorens’ side, who now have a total of 10 points and are lurking close to the top of the Primera División.
Few chances, lots of control
Despite coming out onto the pitch with the intention on controlling the match and creating chances in front of Valencia’s goal, the Blaugrana - or Valencia - didn’t come close to scoring the opener. Despite the lack of chances, Barça were comfortable on the pitch and halfway through the first half the first goal was scored. After a play down the right wing from Marta Corredera, her cross fell to Alexia, who beat her mark and fired the ball into the back of the net. The game opened up a bit after the goal, and the right back Marta Unzué created a lot of danger down the right wing.
Three goals after the break
With the scoreboard reflecting the 1-0, the Blaugrana came out in the second half with the intention of increasing their lead. Valencia’s obligation to look for the equaliser left them vulnerable at the back and Barça didn’t take long to take advantage of the situation. Corredera, who got the assist in the first goal, scored the second, her third of the season, after a good play and assist from Sonia Bermúdez.
After the 2-0 many more chances were created by Xavi Llorens’ players and the result could have been much more dramatic. What’s more, Valencia hardly ever threatened Esther’s goal. It wasn’t until the end of the match that Barça notched up its third and fourth goals. Vicky nabbed her team’s third after a good assist from Alba Aznar, and Sonia Bermúdez scored the final goal of that match.
