At a ceremony held at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo this evening, Xavi Hernández collected the 2012 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, together with Real Madrid and Spain keeper Iker Casillas. The jury made the award taking into account the fact that the two had won the most important titles at both club and international level and were considered to be models of good sportsmanship and team spirit, an attitude that has helped to overcome some of the differences between players and fans of the two great La Liga rivals. For the jury: “they are an example of fair play admired by everyone”. The two players shared an emotional embrace after thanking the jury for their award and dedicating it to the audience.
The Barça midfielder travelled to Oviedo after training this morning (VIDEO) and was accompanied at the ceremony by Club President Sandro Rosell, vice-president Carles Vilarrubí and board member Susana Monje, as well as his close family including his father, mother and partner.
This is the second time that Xavi and Casillas have won the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, following the 2010 award to the Spanish World Cup winning team. Tito Villanova spoke of the two this week and claimed: “both Xavi and Casillas deserve this prize. They have had amazingly successful careers and after the most recent rather hot tempered games between Barça and Madrid they have created a calm atmosphere and we should thank them for that. They are a credit to the academies of both clubs”.
Xavi will be flying back to Barcelona this evening and then travelling with the rest of the squad to Madrid tomorrow for the game against Rayo Vallecano.
