AnteTomic, one of Barça Regal’s newest players, told Barça TV and fcbarcelona.com what his objectives are now that he’s an Azulgrana. The 25-year-old Croatian also talked about what he can bring to XaviPascual’s team.
The Liga title, a priority
Tomic, who will wear the number 44 on his back, said that his main goal is to win the Liga Endesa title, a title that slipped away from his grasp when he was a Real Madrid player last year. “I love the Liga Endesa, it’s very difficult, very competitive and one of the best leagues in the world. I want to win it,” he said.
When asked about the possibility of facing his ex-team in the final of the Copa del Rey, Tomic said: “I don’t care who the rival is, all I want is to win.” The Croatian views the Euroleauge as an important title, but he reiterated that “first we have to win the Liga.”
Going from guard to the post
The Azulgrana power forward is a true interior player. Tomic, despite starting off as a guard, has moved his position closer and closer to the post due to his stature. The fact that he started playing basketball as an exterior player means that his ball handling skills are honed and his court awareness is that of a point guard. In addition, his foot work, thanks to his astounding coordination for a player his size, is different to that of a normal power forward.
His qualities are perfectly suited to Barça Regal’s style of play, in fact, Tomic confirmed that Pascual has already given him a couple of guidelines ahead of the 2012/13 season: “he wants me to play a similar style to what Messina - one of Madrid’s coaches - asked me to play: post up high and low and to have the ball, from there I have to find my options and my team-mates that have open shots.”
Lorbek and Navarro
Tomic is the type of player that doesn’t shy away from big games and he feels comfortable with the pressure of making the game-winning shot. He’ll soon find that at Barça Regal he’ll have team-mates with the same characteristics. The Croatian already knows MarcelinhoHuertas, ErazemLorbek and Todorovic. On the Slovenian forward, who he will pair up with in the paint, Tomic said: “Lorbek is a fantastic player, he can play in the interior and shoot from the exterior - he can play both in the number four and five positions. I think I can play well with him, but that’s a decision for Xavi Pascual.”
On Juan Carlos Navarro, the Croatian said: “he is amazing, I can’t say anything else. He’s won everything these past couple of years with Barça and with the Spanish national team. I’m very pleased that I get to play with him.”
“Taking a step forward”
“I believe it’s a step forward in my career,” said Tomic when asked why he signed for FC Barcelona Regal. He added, “it’s a great opportunity for me, Barça is a great team. I want to prove that I can play at a high level and do a better job than when I was at Madrid.”
