After more than a decade playing at the top level in Spain, Iñigo has proven his qualities at centre back

Born in Ondarroa on 17 May 1991, a town in the region of Vizcaya in the Basque Country, Iñigo Martinez Berridi comes to Barça with a wealth of experience in La Liga behind him. First with Real Sociedad and then Athletic Club, Martínez has made more than 350 appearances in the league, scoring 22 goals.

Martínez started his career at his hometown club of Aurrera d’Ondarroa before joining the youth set up at Real Sociedad at the age of 15. He made his debut for the first team in August 2011 and after six seasons with the club from Sant Sebastián he moved to their rivals Athletic Club. After six seasons in Bilbao he comes to Barça as one of the most highly rated centre halves in Spanish Football.

In his first season as a blaugrana in 2023/24 injury prevented him from having a run in the side and he made 25 appearances over the campaign. In 24/25 under Hansi Flick the Basque defender became a regular in the starting line up playing 46 matches and winning his first trophies as a blaugrana.

After representing Spain at various youth levels, Martinez has also played for the full national side.

Excellent in the air, Iñigo Martinez has the talent to bring the ball out from the back and his defensive skills will bring even solidity to the Barça back line. Vastly experienced, the defender also stands out for his leadership qualities and his competitive nature.
