A look back at Barça's previous league matches at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys

Barça first played a league game at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in the 1928/29 season when it was still called Estadi de Montjuïc

Barça are set to play their first competitive game at their new home, Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, against Cádiz on Sunday 20 August (kick-off 7.30pm CEST), fulfilling the matchday two fixture of the 2023/24 season. The game will be the 19th time that the blaugranas play a league game on Montjuïc, but only the fourth as the home side.

First time on Montjuïc due to the 1929 Exposición Universal

The blaugranas temporarily left their ground at Les Corts in 1929 to play three games at the Estadio de Montjuic because of the Exposición Internacional of Barcelona. Back on 26 May 1929, the first league match saw FC Barcelona play Atlético Madrid, with the 14th matchday fixture ending in a comfortable victory for the home side (4-0), with Sastre, Samitier (2) and Walter the scorers.

The blaugranas also played at the Estadio de Montjuïc against Europa and Espanyol. The game against the side from the Gracia neighbourhood in Barcelona on 2 June ended 1-1, with Samitier scoring for Barça. The match against Espanyol on 16 June also ended 1-1, with Sastre scoring for Barça this time.

FC Barcelona ended up being crowned 1928/29 Liga champions in what was the first ever Spanish league season. A total of 18 games were played (as there were only ten teams in the league), and the blaugranas finished with 25 points, two more than second placed Real Madrid.

Away league matches at Montjuïc

However, Barça have played many more games as the away side at Montjuïc. FC Barcelona played the 1943, 1944 and 1946 derbies against Espanyol there, as the blue and whites wanted to play at a larger venue than their home Sarrià stadium. The games in 1943 and 1946 saw the blaugranas win 1-3 and 0-1 respectively, while the game in 1944 ended 1-1.

Many years later and now called Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Espanyol rented the stadium from 1997 and 2009. That period in what will be Barça's new home during the 2023/24 season, saw the blaugranas win six times, with four draws and two defeats.
