João João Rodrigues

A forward who can score and has a large presence in the area, always ready to put the ball in the back of the net.

Born in the town of Oeiras, near Lisbon, Portugal, João Rodrigues began playing roller hockey at Paço de Arcos in 1995. He rose through the lowe categories and made his debut at the highest level when he was only 16 years old, in the 2006/07 season. His skills also attracted the attention of the Portuguese national team coaches, who asked him participate in all the championships of the lower categories, and in the 2009/10 season he made the leap to Benfica.

With Benfica, Rodrigues won all possible club competitions, 16 titles in all, leading Benfica back to the upper echelons of the sport. The two seasons before arriving at Barça, in 2016/17 and 2017/18,  Rodrigues was the top goalscorer in the Portuguese League, with 52 and 50 goals, respectively.

He also plays for the senior Portuguese national team. He made his debut in 2011 at the Montreux Nations Cup and continued to get the call for subsequent European Championships in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, in the 2013 and 2015 Nations Cups, and also in the World Cups in 2013, 2015 and 2017. His first game as captain came in 2016 at Oliveira de Azemires.

He arrived at Barça Lassa in the summer of 2018.

Technical profile

Rodrigues is left-handed with a very strong inside game. He has great presence and good positioning in the area, in part, thanks to his height, and is always ready to finish. He stands out as a specialist on penalty shots and is the second Portuguese player to play for Barça. The first was Carlos Realista during the 1987/88 season.
