FC Barcelona have qualified for the semifinals of the King’s Cup after dispatching Tecnol Reus in the quarterfinals. Gaby Cairo’s men beat the Catalan side by a solitary goal (8-7). The Barça manager highlighted his team’s attitude in the post-match press conference after the quarterfinals against Reus. “The match went like we though it would, with Reus on the attack. We knew it would be complicated,” said Cairo.

Barça will have to face Vilanova this Saturday to qualify for the final. The hosts, Vilanova, beat out Shum in an exciting quarterfinal showdown that also finished with a very close scoreline: 11-10. Cairo expects a difficult match for his men this Saturday: “the semifinals will be very hard. To win a competition like this one you have to play the 50 minutes, because all the rivals play very well. We’ll try to recuperate as best we can and play like we did in the quarterfinals, with the same attitude.”

On form Vilanova

On thing is guaranteed, Vilanova Mopesa will take on Cairo’s men with intensity in the semifinals. The hosts established a goalscoring record in their quarterfinal match against Shum; it was the match with the most goals ever in a quarterfinal King’s Cup playoff (11-10). Vilanova currently sit ninth in the OK League, with 21 points.

The last Barça-Vilanova was played on February 25th 2012, when both teams faced off on week 14 of the OK League. The match was won by the Azulgranas in convincing fashion (7-2). However, in the first half of the competition both sides drew 2-2. These past meetings, if anything, guarantee a hard-fought semifinal match this evening.
