Barça Lassa v Telekom Veszprém HC: First points in the Champions (31-28)

Xavi Pascual's side secure their first victory in the Champions League at the Palau Blaugrana

Barça Lassa secured their first two points in Group A of the Champions League against Telekom Veszprem HC (31-28), after having lost in the first round against Rhein-Neckar Löwen. The Palau Blaugrana has become a fortress for the blaugranes, with the Hungarian team never having won in their nine visits.

Equal first half

Xavi Pascual’s men started with lots of energy but the first to score was ex-Barça Lassa player Nagy for the opposition. The blaugranes were superior and they soon overturned the goal and went 4-1 up. Telekom Veszprém responded well and they managed to bring the scores back to 7-7.

The game was fast and end-to-end. Barça were playing well but Veszprém were pushing them hard with their physicality. Mortensen and Mem impressed for Barça Lassa as they managed to edge their side in front by the break (17-14). This wouldn’t have been possible without Pérez de Vargas’s fantastic performance in goal.

Solid in the second half

The game became bitty and the pace dropped but Barça stayed at least five goals ahead with Mem getting six and Mortensen seven. Mistakes near the end made it tense with the blaugranes digging deep in defence to secure an important win by 31-28. The next game is on Wednesday against Bidasoa Irún, in the fourth Asobal League fixture.
