Pérez de Vargas in action on Wednesday / Pillaud - IHF

FC Barcelona left the Super Globe 2015 with a win that earned them third place in the world championship for clubs. After beating Al Ahly of Egypt 20-16 in the quarter finals and then losing 26-25 in the semis to Füchse Berlín, they bowed out with victory in the third place playoff against the Oceania champions from Sydney University.

The eventual ten-point difference belies what was actually a fascinatingly tight match. The Aussies, with Joan Cornellà of Catalonia and Diego Llorente of Leon in the side, started strong and held Barça at bay for long periods.

Barça Lassa were trailing after eight minutes, whereupon Gurbindo scored to draw level, and from then on it was full steam ahead and the half ended with them 15-10 in front.

The ASOBAL champions made their physical superiority tell after the break, and the gap between the teams gradually started to widen.

After coming home with the trophy in the last two editions of the competition, this time Barça had to settle for bronze medals. They now return home to start preparing for the second game of the domestic championship this Saturday in Zaragoza. That game starts at 8.30pm CET.
