The FC Barcelona - THW Kiel connection

Thirteen players have represented both the German 'zebras' and the Catalan 'blaugrana'

After signing Wael Jallouz, there have now been 13 players that have worn the black and white of THW Kiel and the red and blue of FC Barcelona. From Nenad Perunicic to Jallouz, there are plenty of historic ties between the two clubs.

Current players

Five of those are still playing today. At Barcelona, Nikola Karabatic, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson and Wael Jallouz are all former THW Kiel stars.

In turn, Kiel currently has Catalan Joan Cañellas and Swede Johan Sjöstrand who both formerly played for FC Barcelona’s handball team.

Dream Team legends

Demetrio Lozano and Andrey Txepkin were both part of the Dream Team that dominated the game in the late nineties, and also spent time at THW Kiel.

Lozano was at Kiel from 2001 to 2004 and Andrey Txepkin in late 2006/07, helping the Germans to their seventh European Cup. Txepkin also won six with Barça.

Historic names

Nenad Perunicic wore the THW Kiel shirt from 1997 to 2001 and later played for Barça in 2006/07.

Jérôme Fernández, now at Fenix Toulouse also played for both Barça and Kiel, the former from 2002 to 2008 and the latter in 2009/10.

Croatian Davor Dominikovic also spent a season at Kiel in 2002/03 and then was on FCB’s books from 2004 to 2006.

Jeppesen, Andersson and Hagen

Denmark’s Lars Jeppesen played for Barça from 2004 to 2006, and left directly for THW Kiel in 2007.

Current Flesnburg goalkeeper Mattias Andersson spent the latter stages of the 2000/01 season with FC Barcelona and was Kiel’s goalie from 2001 to 2008.

And Norwegian Frode Hagen was at Barça from 2002 to 2004 and at THW Kiel from 2004 to 2006.
