Barça Intersport will be represented by two players in the final of the handball Olympic gold-medal match after Jernemyr and Sjostrand’s Sweden edged Hungary in the semi-final. Sweden won the match by 26 to 27 in a hotly contested game and earned the right to face the winner of the Croatia-France semi-final on Sunday. If France make it to the final, Barça Intersport will have three representatives in the gold-medal game.

Close game until the end

Sweden and Hungary battled for a spot in the final on the court of the Basketball Arena this afternoon. The two European teams were unable to open up a significant lead throughout the 60-minute match, however, when the scoreboard reflected the eight-all halfway through the first half, Sweden slowly carved out a small lead. Before that, however, both the Azulgranas had spent time on the court. The Barça Intersport keeper was sent to defend the Sweden goal when Hungary was given a penalty. Of the four penalties against Sweden, Sjostrand saved two. At the break the scoreboard reflected a 12 to 15 for Sweden.

The second half picked up where the first left off, with Sweden pushing to increase its lead and Hungary, with the ex-Azulgrana Nagy, battling to get back into the game. With eight minutes left on the clock, Sweden’s lead was cut to one solitary goal (23-24). But in the end, Jernemyr and Sjostrand’s team held out against the Hungarian onslaught to secure passage to the Olympic final.
