This Sunday’s match, at 17:00 on Esport3, will pit FC Barcelona’s handball team against Montpelier in France for the third time. The Azulgranas will have to play in the historic venue of Pabellón René Bougnol, seeing that Montpelier’s Park and Suite Arena is booked for a Cirque du Soleil performance.

Winning at home

Barça has played away to Montpelier twice in official Champions League ties. The first was in 2000/01, where the Catalans and the Frenchmen faced off in the group stages.

In that match, the teams finished the game with a 25-all draw, in the Palau, Barca won by 24 to 17.

The last time the teams met in was in the Round of 16 during the 2006/07 season. Barça, managed by Xesco Espar, lost to Montpelier by 28 to 25. However, in the return leg at the Palau, the Azulgranas fought back and won 29 to 23.

Total visits to France

In official European matches, Barça has played in France on nine occasions. Gagny, Créteil, Nimes, Olympic Marseille, Irvy, Chambéry and Montpelier were Barça’s rivals.

Of the nine visits, FC Barcelona has won four times, drawn twice and lost three.
