The FC Barcelona handball team has reached the end of a long season in which they needed to produce their very best to make it into the final. In a season marked by the loss of coach Xavi Pascual for some time due to poor health, Barça Intersport were unable to overcome Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey final and lost in the quarters of the Champions League to Copenhagen. But they were magnificent in the domestic league, with a 29-1 record and triumph ultimately coming at the Palau Blaugrana on the final day.

Atlético Madrid win Supercup

Barça Intersport couldn’t get the 2011-2012 season off to a winning start. Xavi Pascual’s side lost at Vistalegre in the Asobal Supercup against Atlético Madrid (33-26), who retained the title after a disappointing display from the Catalans in the second half.

Twelfth Pyrenees League

After that defeat to Atlético Madrid, Barça got back on track against Fraikin Granollers (38-26) to win the Pyrenees League for the twelfth time in the history of the competition.

Copa Asobal before Christmas

Barça Intersport were awarded the early Christmas present of the Copa Asobal, the second title of the season, which also ensured their presence in the Champions League next season. The day after beating Valladolid in the semis, Barça saw off the hosts Ademar in the final (27-28), with Saric clinching it with a penalty save in the final minute.

Eighteenth Copa del Rey slips away

Xavi Pascual’s side lost to Atlético Madrid in the XXXVII edition of the Copa del Rey. Barça led at half time but the mattress-makers came out much stronger after the break and the Blaugrana thus missed out on their eighteenth title in the competition.

Out in quarters of Champions League

Barça were heading for their third EHF Champions League Final Four after a dramatic round of 16 win against Montpellier at the Palau Blaugrana. But despite that impressive comeback, they were unable to repeat the trick after going down 29-23 in Copenhagen in the quarter finals. The 36-33 win in the second leg was not quite enough.

Liga reconquered

The defeat to Atlético Madrid (29-30) in the second to last game meant the Asobal title went right down to the wire. Barça Intersport made no mistake by beating Torrevella at the Palau Blaugrana (38-28) and thus retained the title, their nineteenth in all, with an extraordinary 29-1 record.
