FC Barcelona Intersport closed out the 2012/13 season in record fashion. In fact, they successfully defended their league and Asobal Cup titles and they won the Asobal Super Cup and Catalonia Super Cup, taking their tally to four titles out a possible six this year. In the Champions League, Xavi Pascual’s men made it to the final in Cologne, but they were defeated by Hamburg, and in the Cup they were eliminated by Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals.

The first titles, the Super Cups

Pascual’s men kicked off the season with a berth in the Catalan Super Cup - formerly known as the Liga de los Pirineos. Barça qualified for the final after eliminateing Bordils in the semifinals (23-43). In the final they defeated Fraikin Granollers (20-28) in a special match for Sterbik, who made his debut for the team, and for Víctor Tomás, who was the team’s new captain.

Five days later, Barça Intersport travelled to Madrid to play in the Asobal Super Cup against Atlético Madrid. The intense match at the Palacio de Vistalegre was won by Barça thanks to a narrow 31 to 34 scoreline.

Before year’s end, the team faced off against Reale Ademar León in the semifinals of the Asobal Cup. Barça went on to defeat Ademar by 32 to 21 before taking on Atlético Madrid in the final, which was also won by the Blaugrana (24-32).

Liga champions

Barça Intersport won their third consecutive league title this season, the team’s 20th in the history of the Club. The Blaugrana nearly completed a perfect season as they were only defeated once on their way to the crown. Pascual’s men opened up a gap of three points over Atlético Madrid by December. The difference between the top two teams of the league increased in February after Barça’s seven internationals returned from the World Championship as champions with Spain. With three weeks left on the schedule, Barça Intersport claimed the title away to Ademar León.

One step away from European glory

Barça Intersport qualified for the final of the Champions League but they were defeated by Hamburg. The team made it to the championship match after comfortably cruising though the group stage and mounting a come-from-behind victory over Atlético Madrid in the quarterfinals. In Cologne, Pascual’s men eliminated KS Vive Targa Kielce in the semifinals before facing off against the eventual champions of the competition, Hamburg.
