Iberostar Tenerife v FC Barcelona Lassa: Defeat at difficult away ground (71-60)

Bartzokas' men fought hard throughout the match but were unable to finish the first round of fixtures with a win at a court which is notoriously hard to get a result at

Barça Lassa lost to Iberostar Tenerife (71-60) in the final match of the first round of fixtures in the Liga ACB. Bartzokas' side played excellently in the second quarter and were in with a chance of securing an important away win but were unable to do so at Santiago Martín. Tenerife have only lost once in the league and on that occassion it was by a single point. Iberostar have been a revelation so far this season and they now have 12 wins, which is the same as Barça Lassa.

The game started with Iberostar Tenerife scoring three pointers regularly, with five in the first quarter alone. Three of these came from Doomekamp. Barça didn't let the home side get too far ahead though and Doellman and Tomic kept the Catalans in the game. A three pointer on the stroke of the end of the first quarter from Víctor Claver was chalked off by the referees who said it went in after the whistle had gone. This meant the blaugranas went into the second quarter trailing by eight points (23-15).

Barça Lassa respond

The Catalans responded through Doellman, who scored 11 points in the first 13 minutes of the game. Bartzokas' side were ten points behind at one point but they clawed their way back and managed to level the scores at 27-27. Vezenkov's regular scores, with six in the second quarter, and contributions from Dorsey and Koponen gave Barça a lead. Their free scoring attack added to an impressive defence, which limited the home side to six points in the whole quarter, allowed Barça to head into the break leading 33-29.

The third quarter was evenly matched even though Barça managed to take a six point lead which they lost when Tenerife responded well. The Catalans responded again through a great Juan Carlos Navarro basket but after this the home team took control and had a dominant period in which they scored 14 points to two Barça ones.

The blaugranas were struggling in attack in the third quarter and this gave the team from Tenerife the opportunity to open up a small six point advantage ahead of the final ten minutes of the game (49-43).

A decisive final quarter

The final quarter started with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. Nevertheless, White scored a three pointer, Tomic and Vezenkov responded and the Bogris scored again for Tenerife. Both sides were scoring but Barça were unable to close the gap and the home side couldn't build their lead.

The game went into the final five minutes with the result completely up for grabs. Tenerife took control of the game and scored in quick succession helping them but daylight between the two teams. Barça tried to respond through Tomic but it wasn't enough and the final score was 71-60 to the home team.

In the end, the defeat was harsh on Barça as they let the game slip away from them in the final five minutes. The result leaves Barça with a record of twelve wins and four defeats following the end of the first round of league fixtures.
