Ante Tomic led the way for Barcelona with 18 points / EUROLEAGUE.NET

FC Barcelona Lassa have beaten Žalgiris Kaunas to go 3-1 in Euroleague Group C, second only to Lokomotiv Kuban of Russia (4-0). After a poor start, Tomic led the charge with 18 points but Žalgiris were able to hang on largely thanks to fine performances from Seibutis and Jankunas (18 and 17). In the final stages, Arroyo, Navarro and Ribas produced their best game of the night and the Catalans managed things to perfection to ensure that they held on to their lead.

Žalgiris led the way early on, and at 15-10 a desperate Xavi Pascual called a timeout in an attempt to halt the surge. Not that it changed things too much, and not even some of Tomic’s finest minutes on court could prevent the Lithuanians from extending their lead to 23-17. Two 3-pointers in quick succession from Perperoglou, however, meant there was just one point in it at the close of the first ten minutes (23-22).

An Abrines three and two free throws from Satoransky finally got Barça in front at 27-29. Žalgiris were starting to struggle, but Barça failed to capitalise on a series of errors and allowed the home side to pull back level on 33-33. Pau Ribas took the reins in offence for the final minutes of the half, and Barça hit back to 35-40, and some late scores from Vezenkov meant the sides went in for the break with visitors in a promising 39-45 lead.

Holding on

The third period started with a Navarro three, and that was a sign of some great things to come. Barça went ten points ahead at 49-59, and from then on it was a case of hanging onto that advantage. Žalgiris managed to stay in contention mainly thanks to some great individual plays, especially from Seibutis, but their misfortune with 3-point attempts was starting to prove costly.

With seven minutes left, Žalgiris got back to within eight points, but the sudden chance of a comeback was thwarted when Arroyo make it 63-74 and by the time Ribas had got it to 68-82, that was game over as far as the Lithuanians were concerned. Xavi Pascual’s side managed the final minutes to perfection to secure a third win in the group, and an important one away to one of Europe’s trickiest opponents, who are now third in the group on 2-2.

Next up for Barça in the Euroleague are group leaders Lokomotiv Kuban, who are at the Palau Blaugrana on November 12 (8.45pm CET).
