Ante Tomic managed 28 points against Zalgiris Kaunas at the Palau / VICTOR SALGADO- FCB

FC Barcelona Lassa needed a win to be in with a chance of finishing top of their Euroleague group going into the final game of the stage but fell just short against Zalgiris Kaunas at Palau Blaugrana (88-92).

Xavi Pascual’s side were slow out of the traps as the visitors opened up a healthy margin in the first period (16-27).

Carlos Arroyo brought the Palau to life with a stunning three-pointer to start off the second quarter. The Puerto Rican managed three consecutive baskets, two of which were trebles, which served to instill some belief into the Barça side, which nevertheless trailed going into the half-time break (38-45).

The Catalans began to find gaps in the Lithuanian defense in the third period, in large part thanks to Tomic who was Barça’s outstanding performer with 28 points, as the home side narrowed the score to 55-58. Perperoglou then brought the crowd to its feet as the deficit was reduced to just one point (61-62), though a three-pointer from the visitors deflated Barça as it meant they headed into the fourth period seven points behind (63-70).

Barça never threw in the towel but were unable to stage a heroic fightback late on, despite more magic from Tomic in the final 15 minutes, as the home side fell to their first defeat at the Palau in Europe this season, 88-92.
