Before heading off to Athens to lead the team in their final game of the Euroleague group phase, Barça basketball coach Xavi Pascual gave his reaction to the contract extension that will tie him to the club until 2016/17. “I am very happy with how everything has gone because it has been very easy, both parties wanted the same thing,” said Pascual who will celebrate his new deal by taking charge of his 500th game as coach of the blaugranes this Friday in Greece. “I am happy that the Club has shown confidence in me once again and that we can continue with this project, let’s hope we can be successful,” remarked the Catalan coach.

Putting Barça first

Since he took control of the first team, Xavi Pascual has kept them amongst the elite of the game, winning trophies at home and abroad, a fact that has not gone unnoticed in the rest of Europe. “Coaching at Barça means that other people take notice of what you are doing. Recently, knowing that my contract was almost up, people have made me offers but in no case where they important offers. Right now I am really at home here and I am prioritising my feelings for the club and the continuity of a project that is in motion and that is exciting for me on a daily basis,” continued one of the most respected coaches on the continent.

Long career at the Club

Pascual arrived at the Club in 2004 when he took control of the second team, and at the time he never imagined becoming first team coach. “I thought about it more in my previous career, the more unknown part. Once I got here and I started to coach the second team then everything started to move very quickly,” added Pascual, who highlighted his successes that brought him to the attention of the club. “Eight years ago I was coaching seniors in different categories and it’s true that at that time I thought that it would be great to coach at the top level.”
