Olympiacos' path to the Euroleague quarter-finals

The Greeks topped their initial group and then finished third in the Top 16 phase Their top scorer Vasillis Spanoulis has missed the last four games due to injury

A record of 18 wins and 6 defeats in their 24 Euroleague games allowed the Greek side to finish in first place in Group D in the opening phase of the competition with an 8-2 record. In the top 16 they recorded a 10 victories with just 4 defeats to end up in third place in a fiercely contested group. Barça for their part have an overall 20-4 record so far in the competition, the second best behind CSKA Moscow who have lost just twice in 24 games.

Quality opposition

An Olympiacos team coached by Giannis Sfairopoulos beat Valencia twice in the opening phase as well as facing Lithuanian side Neptunas Klapeida, Laboral Kutxa from Vitoria, Turkish side Galatasaray and Serbians KK Crvena zvezda. Six wins in a row helped to the Greeks to top spot in the initial group stage, losing only twice in ten games.

Tough Top 16 group

Once through to the next stage of the competition, the opponents became even tougher. CSKA Moscow, Fenerbahce, Unicaja Málaga, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, Anadolu Efes and Nihzy Novgorod and Laboral Kutxa again were the Greeks rivals. Olympiacos started brilliantly with four straight wins before finally succumbing to defeat away at Efes. Following that, another streak of four victories got them back onto the winning track before losing against Fenerbahce and in Vitoria. Defeat in the penultimate game against CSKA condemned them to third place in the group.

Therefore, Barça’s rivals in the quarter-finals of the competition are no strangers to competing against the best sides in Europe and they will be ready for the first two games of the tie at the Palau Blaugrana. The main worry for the Greeks going into the contest is the injury to their top points scorer Vassilis Spanoulis, which has kept him out for the last four matches.
