After the team had decided to travel on match day to Germany to avoid Wednesday’s General Strike in Spain, Barça Regal booked a place in the Top 16 of the Euroleague with their sixth win on the run this season against Brose Baskets. With four group games still to play and combined with Lietuvos Rytas defeat against CSKA (62-71), Pascual’s team have achieved their first objective of the season.

The team stay to of Group D and the win, against a Brose Basket team who came into the match on the back of six wins in the German and European league, confirms how the team are improving game on game.

Nothing in it at the start

There was plenty of atmosphere in the 6,000 capacity Stechert Arena, where Pascual sent out his regular starting five of Marcelinho, Navarro, Mickeal, Lorbek and Tomic. The start of a game saw some quick exchanges of points with Nachbar, Gipson and Zirbes the reference points for the hosts and Lorbek and Navarro leading the visitors and a late basket from Jawai meant the first quarter ended 22-23.

Intensity moves up a notch

Three pointers from Navarro and Ingles got the second quarter off to a start as the intensity of the game moved up a notch, with Chris Fleming dominating under the basket. Barça’s collective game proved too much for the Germans, despite their difficulties controlling defensive rebounds and the contribution of 17 points before the break from Nachbar. Navarro finished the quarter as he’d started it with another great three pointer and Barça went in at half time 42-47 up.

Barça Regal withstand Germans’ fightback...

Brose Baskets came out with a much more aggressive zonal defence in the third quarter and Sergerio Gipson soon brought the scores level at 49-49, but Barça kept their nerve and soon stretched away again to lead 53-64 going into the final 10 minutes.

...and underline their improving form

Barça Regal continued to control the pace of the game in the final quarter and two spectacular scores from Rabaseda and another from Tomic, who had played despite a bout of flu, quietened the German crowd as the visitors putt even more distance between themselves and their hosts, ending with a 20 point advantage - 66-86 – in what was their 500th game in Europe’s top competition.

Barça Regal’s next game is set for this Sunday, when they travel to Baloncesto Fuenlabrada, in the eighth round of the Lliga Endesa.
