Barça Regal – Reial Madrid: El Clàssic més històric val una final

This Friday at 21.00 (Esport3 and Teledeporte) the two powerhouses of Spanish basketball will face off for a spot in the final of the most prestigious competition of the continent, the Euroleague.

Last June, Barça Regal and Real Madrid battled it out in spectacular fashion for a the league title. Months later, in September, they played in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, and, finally, in February of this year, they once agains faced off in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.

An electric Madrid against a solid Barça Regal

Madrid are managed by Pablo Laso, who will be making his debut in the Euroleague’s Final Four, as Barça Regal are managed by Xavi Pascual, who has featured in four Final Fours. The Catalan will have to come up with a way to stop a very fast Madrid side but it's worth noting that they suffer if they can't control the pace of play.

Barça Regal’s defence will be crucial if the Blaugrana are to succeed at stopping the likes of Rudy Fernández’s penetrating drives, Sergio Rodríguez’s distribution, Llull’s electric shooting, and reducing Mirotic’s dominant play in the paint. It’s a tough challenge, but the Blaugrana are convinced they can do it.

On the other hand, Barça Regal need to make Real Madrid’s defence work hard. The Blaugrana need to be patient in order to find the right shot. Navarro needs to lead his team, Marcelinho’s distribution will be key, Lorbek must make his presence felt in the paint, and Tomic must dominate on defence and on the other end of the court.

The Clásico, not just a basketball game

Anything can happen in a basketball game especially when it comes to this particular match-up. Big matches are decided by tiny details, and it’s clear that the winner this Friday will be the team that manages to be most effective in all facets of the game; free throws cannot be missed, each possession is worth its weight in gold, and the right mentality could prove to be the factor that tips the scales in favour of victorious side.

Juan Carlos Navarro, Marcelinho Huertas, Erazem Lorbek, Ante Tomic and company - with Nathan Jawai all but ruled out of the match- will jump onto the court of the O2 Arena to face off against Sergio Rodríguez, Sergio Llull, Rudy Fernández, Nikola Mirotic and company.

Barça Regal and Real Madrid will meet in the Euroleague 17 years after the Blaugrana defeated Madrid in the Euroleauge semi-final in Paris. This occasion is just as historic, it’ll be a match for the history books.
